Chris Hemsworth Talks Marvel, Reviews Thor
The actor’s latest foray is as the God of Thunder in the 2022 film Thor: Love and Thunder it got a decidedly mixed reaction, scoring 63% Rotten tomatoes and 6.2 on IMDb.
According to the profile, critics of the film included friends of Chris’ 8-year-old son. “I’ve had a bunch of 8-year-olds criticize my movie: ‘We thought it had too much humor, the action was cool, but the VFX wasn’t that good,'” Chris recalled. “I laugh and laugh at the same time.”
When it came to the reaction of adult critics, Chris said: “I think we had too much fun. It got too silly.”
“It’s always hard to be in the center and have a real perspective… I love the process, it’s always a journey. But you just don’t know how people are going to react.”
Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese have made two major criticisms of the MCU in recent years. The former still referred Chris specifically stated that “Hollywood’s wonderment” led to the decline of movie stardom, saying, “Thor is the star.”
“It’s very depressing when I hear that,” Chris said of the comments. “I have two heroes that I’m not going to work with. I don’t think they’re into it.”
“I’m grateful to have been a part of something that kept people in theaters. I don’t know whether these films were at the expense of other films or not,” he continued. “I don’t like it when we start scrutinizing each other when business and the arts are as fragile as they are.”
“I’m saying this less to the directors who made those comments, who are all my heroes, by the way, and I’d work with any of them in a heartbeat. But I’m saying this more to the broader theme.”
When it comes to criticism of the MCU that the stakes are all too high, Chris explained, “That’s the trick: you have to separate these stories. That moment like, “Your world is in danger, the entire universe!” It’s like, “Yeah, yeah [it] was the last 24 movies. It needs to become a little more personal and grounded.”
Chris remains open to reprising his role as Thor, depending on “what they can bring creatively, if there’s something new” for the character. Still, he added, “But I really want to do other things for a while.”
