In a two-day event featuring four rival teams next February, the New Jersey Devils will play the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Islanders will play the New York Rangers in the 2024 NHL Stadium Series at MetLife Stadium.
The first time four NHL teams will play outdoor games at the same venue, the Devils host the Flyers on the evening of Feb. 17, followed by the Islanders hosting the Rangers the following day at a date yet to be determined. ESPN will televise both games.
The Rangers’ Madison Square Garden lease prohibits them from playing a home game outside their home arena, making them the road team for this game.
The NHL’s original plan was for the Devils to play the Rangers in a single game at MetLife Stadium.
“It’s been repeated a lot of times what we want to do here. But when we started looking at the games, the game, the tri-state area and the great hockey that’s being played in the New York area, we felt like it was going to be unique. It was a way to keep it fresh. our outdoor games,” said Steve Mayer, NHL director and vice president of content.
Home of the NFL’s New York Jets and New York Giants, the NHL welcomes more than 75,000 fans to every game.
Mayer said that despite its proximity to New York and two New York teams playing in the event, the plan is to emphasize that the games will be played in New Jersey.
“We’re going to be super creative,” Mayer said. “We’re going to highlight it. Our goal is that when someone tunes in to watch this, they know we’re playing in New Jersey. We’re going to look at everything the New Jersey area has to offer.”
This will be the Flyers’ sixth regular-season outdoor game, while the Rangers will play their fifth and the Devils and Islanders will play their second outdoor games.
