Jodi Benson defends changes to The Little Mermaid text
Some songs coming soon The Little Mermaid The remake may sound a little different to fans of the original animated film.
This is because songs like “Kiss the Girl” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” went through lyrical revisions before making the final cut.
Composer Alan Menken, who wrote the score for the 1989 film and worked on the remake, explained that the updated lyrics reflect a more modern Disney princess.
“There are some lyrical changes in Kiss the Girl because people were very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] he would force himself on her in any way [Ariel],” he said Vanity Fair.

He continued: “There’s some reworking in ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’ in terms of lines that the young girls might feel like they shouldn’t speak out of line, although Ursula is clearly manipulating Ariel into giving up her voice.

It was all part of the film’s modernization, which star Halle Bailey said “changed the perspective of justice [Ariel] I want to leave the ocean for a boy.”

Jodi shared that she thinks director Rob Marshall and producer John DeLuca “did a nice job with this” while “still honoring and paying homage to our original film.”
“So the adjustments and fine-tuning that they had to do was a must, but it turned out beautifully and I’m really, really thrilled with it,” Jodi concluded.
