Lily-Rose Depp addressed Johnny Depp’s Cannes controversy
For various reasons, the Depps became one of the biggest talking points at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The annual celebration began on May 16 with the world premiere Jeanne du Barry, starring Johnny Depp. The film marks his first starring role in three years following his highly publicized legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard.
In light of this, the allegations of abuse which surfaced during their defamation court case last year – which Depp won in June – the decision to screen the biographical drama caused a strong backlash when the festival started last week.
After the premiere videos about Depp she looked visibly emotional and held back tears as the crowd cheered her on online, sparking further buzz for her return to the forefront of the industry.
And despite the criticism, a man who volt The actor’s daughter Lily-Rose Depp was certainly pleased with the fanfare.
For context, the 23-year-old rarely speaks publicly about her father. Notably, he chose to remain silent on contentious legal battles with Heard last year, and tellingly Elle magazine after the case closed in November, he is “not here to answer for anybody.”
However, Lily-Rose – who is promoting HBO in Cannes The Idol – he made a rare comment about his father’s return, tellingly ET Canada earlier this week that I couldn’t be more thrilled.
“I am very happy about it. I’m really excited,” he sighed, before adding, “It’s so awesome to be able to do projects that we’re extremely proud of.”
If you’ve been keeping up with Cannes, you know that Lily-Rose is currently having a controversy of her own. The Idolpremiered at the festival on Monday.
For some background The Idol tells the story of a troubled pop star named Jocelyn (played by Lily-Rose) who becomes involved in a complicated relationship with a self-help guru and cult leader named Tedros (played by Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd).
The performance – written and directed by him Euphoria Creator Sam Levinson has been surrounded by controversy for some time, especially after a Rolling Stone exposé published interviews with cast and crew members who likened the show to “sexual torture porn.”
Needless to say, screening the first two episodes in Cannes this week didn’t help to soften the blow. early reviews doubling down on the show’s graphic content and on-screen nudity.
Despite this, Lily-Rose – whose character appears seemingly naked at various points in the first two episodes – was quick to speak out against the backlash, telling a press conference that Jocelyn was a “born and bred performer”.
“I think it extends to all aspects of your life, not just your professional life. I think that, for example, the way she dresses, she’s constantly trying to say something, or to tell people that she’s around, or to express herself in some way,” he said.
He added, “I also think that the character’s occasional nudity is a physical reflection of the nudity that we see in him emotionally.”
