San Diego Padres Third baseman Manny Machado has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a hand injury, manager Bob Melvin told reporters before Friday’s home game against the Boston Red Sox.

THE Padres said the move was retroactive to Tuesday

Machado suffered a minor fracture to his left hand after being hit by Kansas City Royals right-hander Brad Keller during Monday’s game. Machado initially stayed in the race and later left.

He missed Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s games against the Royals. THE Padres they weren’t on Thursday

The first X-rays showed no fracture. However, Machado’s CT scan and MRI on Tuesday revealed a metacarpal fracture.

The IL appearance is Machado’s first since 2014 with the Baltimore Orioles.

Machado, 30, is off to a slow start this season, hitting .231 with seven doubles, five home runs and 19 RBIs in 40 games. The six-time All-Star has a .282 on-base percentage and a .372 slugging percentage.

In a corresponding move, Brandon Dixon was recalled from Triple-A El Paso. Dixon is in Friday’s lineup, playing first base and hitting seventh. Jake Cronenworth is at second base and Ha-Seong Kim is at third.

Dixon went 2-12 with eight strikeouts in five games Padres at the beginning of the season. In El Paso, he hit .273 with seven homers and 15 RBIs in 26 games.
