Police believe the suspected police killer also shot the Pizza employee
A Canadian official says the 16-year-old who allegedly killed two police officers before shooting his mother and killing himself shot and killed a Pizza Hut employee earlier this week.
TORONTO — A 16-year-old suspected of killing two police officers before shooting his mother and killing himself is believed to have shot and killed a Pizza Hut employee earlier this week, an official familiar with the case said Friday.
Police say the teenager shot officers in the front room of his Edmonton, Alberta apartment early Thursday, then struggled with his mother over the firearm before shooting and killing himself.
On Sunday, someone walked into a Pizza Hut around the corner from the apartment and shot an employee, who survived. An official familiar with the case told The Associated Press that police believe the suspect is the same. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
Police said the man suspected in Thursday’s shooting had previously received a mental health complaint that involved police. According to the police, he had no criminal record.
Authorities say officers were called to a family fight, but there was no indication that the call was high-risk or dangerous, or that the teenager had a weapon.
“When the two police officers arrived, they were met by a 55-year-old female complainant outside the complex. The two policemen then came to her residence together with her 73-year-old male companion and their 16-year-old son,” the police said in a statement.
“Upon reaching the apartment, both police officers were shot several times by the 16-year-old man, who immediately became incapacitated. The mother and son reportedly got into an argument over the firearm, and the suspect shot the mother before turning the firearm on himself, taking his own life. The father was not injured in the shooting.”
Police say the mother was found unresponsive at the hospital and has not been spoken to. The father is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
Police identified the dead as Travis Jordan, 35, who had been with the Edmonton force for 8 1/2 years, and Brett Ryan, 30, 5 1/2 years.
Edmonton police are also investigating a shooting at a nearby Pizza Hut earlier this week. Not sure if this is related.
It was Edmonton’s first homicide since an officer was shot and killed in 2015. Before that, in 1990, an officer was fatally shot.
